The drone mapping market has grown rapidly, and the range of providers — from solo operators with consumer drones to professional geospatial firms with enterprise equipment — is enormous. The difference in data quality between the best and worst providers is also enormous.

These eight questions will help you evaluate providers and choose one that will deliver the data quality your project requires.

1. Are Your Operators FAA Part 107 Certified?

This is the baseline question. Commercial drone operations require FAA Part 107 certification. Any provider that cannot confirm their operators hold current Part 107 certificates is operating illegally and should be disqualified immediately.

Ask for the certificate number and verify it on the FAA DroneZone website. A legitimate provider will have no hesitation providing this information.

2. What Equipment Do You Use?

The drone and camera used for a survey directly affect data quality. Ask specifically:

  • What drone platform do you use?
  • Does it have RTK GPS?
  • What camera and sensor do you use?
  • What is the camera's sensor size and resolution?

Professional mapping drones (DJI Phantom 4 RTK, Matrice 300 RTK, senseFly eBee X) produce significantly better data than consumer drones. A provider using a DJI Mavic for mapping work is not equipped for professional-grade surveys.

3. What Accuracy Can You Guarantee?

Ask for specific accuracy numbers — horizontal and vertical — and ask how they are achieved. A professional provider should be able to tell you:

  • What accuracy they expect for your project
  • Whether they use RTK GPS, GCPs, or both
  • How accuracy is verified (check points, processing report)

Vague answers like "high accuracy" or "survey grade" without specific numbers are a red flag. Ask for examples of processing reports from previous projects.

Commercial drone operations should be covered by commercial liability insurance. Ask for a certificate of insurance and confirm:

  • Coverage amount (minimum $1M per occurrence for most commercial projects)
  • That the policy covers commercial drone operations (not just recreational)
  • That the policy is current

An uninsured provider exposes your project to liability in the event of an incident.

7. Can You Provide References From Similar Projects?

Ask for references from projects similar to yours — same industry, similar scale, similar deliverable requirements. A provider with extensive experience in construction monitoring may not be the right choice for a complex terrain survey, and vice versa.

Contact the references and ask specifically about data quality, turnaround time, and responsiveness to issues.

8. How Do You Handle Quality Issues?

Ask what happens if the delivered data does not meet the specified accuracy or has quality problems. A professional provider should have a clear policy:

  • Quality issues are identified before delivery through systematic quality assessment
  • If issues are found after delivery, the provider will reprocess or re-fly at no additional cost
  • A processing report is included with every delivery confirming accuracy

A provider that cannot articulate a quality assurance process is likely not performing one.
